Inspiring

You can book one of our speakers for an inspiring and practical biomimicry presentation highlighting the opportunities for innovation inspired by nature relevant for your organisation. These include relevant case studies and an outline of the biomimicry approach specifically suited to your organisation.

In 2012, our team presented over 38 public presentations (that's an average of 3 per month). View our upcoming schedule of presentations or contact us to book an inspiring presentation.

TED Talks

Janine Benyus TEDGlobal 2009

Janine Benyus has a message for inventors: When solving a design problem, look to nature first. There you'll find inspired designs for making things waterproof, aerodynamic, solar-powered and more. Here she reveals dozens of new products that take their cue from nature with spectacular results.

Janine Benyus TEDTalk Feb 2005

In this inspiring talk about developments in biomimicry, Janine Benyus provides heartening examples of ways in which nature is already influencing the products and systems we build.

Michael Palwyn's TED Talk on Biomimicry for Architecture: How can architects build a new world of sustainable beauty? By learning from nature. At TEDSalon in London, Michael Pawlyn describes three habits of nature that could transform architecture and society: radical resource efficiency, closed loops, and drawing energy from the sun.

Kwabena Boahen TEDTalk. An African genius on biomimicry of the human brain for advanced computing. "Putting Africa into computers" Kwabena Boahen wants to understand how brains work -- and to build a computer that works like the brain by reverse-engineering the nervous system.

TEDxCape Town The Genius of Water. Claire Janisch presents some biomimicry inspiration relating to the genius of water.

TEDxSeaPoint Oceans of Innovation Claire Janisch presents the technological miracles of ocean organisms and ecosystems and how they're inspiring solutions to human challenges.

TEDxJohannesburg Survival to Thrival Claire Janisch presents on Biomimicry Innovation in South Africa. She gives a brief introduction to a new documentary of Janine Benyus in South Africa, followed by some inspirational ideas for Biomimicry in South Africa - how we can adapt & evolve and create conditions conducive to life. Thinking beyond sustainability survival to thrival.

TEDxTableMountain Will Lawson explores the fascinating field of biomimicry as a tool to drive objectivity in conservation, stimulate localised innovation and fulfil his personal ambition to blur the boundaries we have constructed between mother nature and human nature.

Second Nature Documentary

Second Nature Documentary

  • Film length: 25 minutes
  • Format: High Definition
  • Director: Guy Lieberman, South Africa
  • Producers: Guy Lieberman and Matthew Rosmarin, South Africa
  • Year completed: 2010

Second Nature: The Biomimicry Evolution explores the emerging discipline of biomimicry, the science of emulating nature’s best ideas to solve human problems. Set in the wilds of South Africa, the film follows biologist, author, and Time magazine “Hero of the Environment” Janine Benyus and The Biomimicry Institute team as they illustrate how organisms in the natural world can teach us how to be more efficient and sustainable engineers, chemists, architects, and business leaders. After 3.8 billion years, life has discovered not only how to survive but also how to thrive as a system. Benyus brings a deep affection and admiration for the natural world as she guides the viewer toward a vision of a planet in balance between continued human progress and ecosystem survival.

Second Nature: The Biomimicry Evolution was an official selection of the Big Sky Documentary Film Festival (February 11 – 20, 2011), the Cleveland International Film Festival (March 24 – April 3, 2011), Planet in Focus Environmental Film Festival(October 12 – 16, 2011), and the Wild & Scenic Film Festival (January 13 – 15, 2012).
