Courses

We offer a number of courses in the forms of workshops and expeditions. These cover the foundational principles and supporting subjects for learning and practicing biomimicry. Once you have completed the introductory workshop, you can choose to do one or more of the other workshops. If you complete the Intro, Life's Principles and Systems Workshops, or the Expedition and Systems Workshop, you can participate in the mentored Learning Journey which also includes the completion of a 6 month practical project related to your work. The Learning Journey is part-time study and can be done outside of working hours.

INTRODUCTION TO BIOMIMICRY WORKSHOP

The Introduction to Biomimicry Workshop includes the foundational principles of biomimicry as well as an opportunity to work in interdisciplinary teams to solve a design challenge using biomimicry thinking and the biomimicry framework. We offer intro workshops a number of times throughout the year. Review our workshop schedule for the next one, or contact us to book one for your organisation.

BIOMIMICRY LIFE'S PRINCIPLES WORKSHOP

Life’s Principles outline strategies for thriving under the operating conditions on Earth. By incorporating these principles into an organisation’s design methodologies and system strategies, the resulting integrated strategies are inherently sustainable because they follow the same principles that allow life to thrive. They're also a set of innovation principles that are beneficial to any organisation/design whether you're focused on sustainability or not. They're also one of the best Systems Thinking supertools. The Biomimicry Life's Principles is a chance to learn and explore these in more detail and work on a practical design challenge with teams to get to know them in practice. RE-IMAGINING SYSTEMS WORKSHOP

This workshop is run in partnership with GeniusWorks. It combines key tools of Systems Thinking with those of Biomimicry and Imagineering. This is a creative workshop exploring how everything is interconnected and what this means for the design of systems. The workshop includes:

  • Imagineering new approaches to systems thinking
  • Discovering the genius of nature's systems
  • Characteristics of systems and living systems
  • Embracing and exploring the unknown
  • What systems thinkers can learn from Dr. Suess
  • Learning to see with our imagination
  • Learning the power of leverage and places to intervene in a system
  • Life’s principles as a systems thinking supertool

BIOMIMICRY & BUSINESS WORKSHOP

Sustainability rests on a simple premise: the interconnectedness of all things, and yet in most organisations it is still treated as a compliance issue which is linked to a company’s license to operate. This workshop explores how organisations can operate like healthy, vibrant ecosystemsby using Biomimicry Life’s principles as their guiding framework. It includes a practical design challenge applying biomimicry thinking and principles to business challenges. EXPEDITION WORKSHOPS

There's no greater way to learn biomimicry and explore the genius of nature from a new perspective, than on a biomimicry expedition. We host at least one biomimicry expedition each year. These are usually in the Kruger National Park (info on last year's one here). We hope to expand these to new adventurous locations, coming soon. The expeditions combine the Intro and Life's Principles workshops with an expedition into nature over 3-6 days.
